Work as a Physiotherapist in New Zealand

Whether you're an internationally trained physiotherapist or planning your next career move, the first step is understanding how PBNZ registration works and which pathway applies to your background.

WHAT IS PBNZ?

The Physiotherapy Board of New Zealand (PBNZ) oversees registration as a legal process, aimed at protecting the public. The Board will grant registration to applicants who are considered competent and fit for registration.

Registration is assessed against the Physiotherapy practice thresholds in Australia and Aotearoa, New Zealand. These thresholds describe the threshold competence required for initial registration and continuing practice as a physiotherapist.

What are the Eligibility Requirements?

To apply for PBNZ registration, you must have completed a recognized physiotherapy qualification. Overseas-trained physiotherapists may require credential assessment.
You must demonstrate that you can comprehend and communicate effectively in English within a professional setting. Accepted evidence includes: IELTS, OET or evidence of a physiotherapy qualification from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, or South Africa.
You will need an academic transcript, Certificate of Good Standing (COGS) from all regulatory authorities you've been registered with, police certificates from any country you lived in, and cultural competency course certificates.
For New Zealand graduates, applications generally take 1-2 weeks to process once all documents are submitted. For international applications it vary depending on education and background.
The APC is mandatory for practicing physiotherapists and must be renewed annually before its expiry on March 31st. This is a separate requirement from registration itself.
Every pathway is different. Every background is different. Behind every registration process is a real career decision.
You have the clinical skills. You need clarity on which pathway applies to you, how your qualification maps to NZ standards, and how to present your evidence. We guide you through the entire PBNZ process.
The Express Pathway is faster, but you still need to understand PBNZ expectations and prepare your application correctly. We ensure you get it right the first time.
The Trans-Tasman pathway is streamlined, but there are still steps to navigate. We help you move smoothly from AHPRA to PBNZ registration.
